Historic Baker House in Wildwood announces holiday tour schedule

The historic Baker House is excited to be offering an evening tour this holiday season in addition to their regular daytime tours which always draw a large crowd.

Located in Wildwood the Baker house, home of Senator David Hume Baker, was built in the 1880s. Each year a different theme is selected and individual rooms are decorated by groups and area businesses. This year’s theme is “Christmas through a Child’s Eye.” Decorations are not required to be period specific. The Baker House will be offering their first ever evening tours from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday Dec. 12.

The historic Baker House is still decorated for the holidays.

The other tours on Dec. 4, 10, 11, 17, 18 and 31 will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tours are $10 per person. The Baker House also offers private tours for groups of 10 or more.

A lot of other sprucing up has gone on at this historic home over the last couple of months. Upstairs windows were replaced necessitating them being temporarily boarded up.

“I don’t want people to think we are closing, when they see boarded windows, I want them to know we are making great improvements,” said Gidget Gibson, director of the Baker House.

Regular visitors will notice some improvements. In addition to the windows, the front porch has been painted. Not as visible but a lot of electrical work has been done, including upgrading the outside lights. Improvements to the Baker House are scheduled in phases; proceeds from the holiday tours will go towards the next improvement phase.

Visitors touring in December will get to vote on their favorite room. Volunteers can always be used, but especially during the holidays.

The Baker House is located at 6106 County Road 44A. To get more information about volunteering or to schedule a tour, contact Gibson at (352) 461-1140 or gidneyb@aol.com. Put Baker House in the subject line.
