A golf cart driver has been sentenced to community service and one year’s probation after his third drunk driving arrest within a decade.
Mark Anthony Fusco, 52, of the Village of Virginia Trace, was arrested May 18 after his green golf cart was spotted parked halfway on the roadway and halfway on the golf cart lane at Buena Vista Boulevard and Old Mill Run.
He failed field sobriety exercises and on the way to the Sumter County Detention Center, he apparently attempted to bribe the deputy who made the arrest.
“What is this going to cost? Is there anything we can do to make this not happen?” Fusco asked the deputy.
At the jail, the New Jersey native agreed to a breathalyzer test, insisting “I am not drunk.”
He provided breath samples that registered .269 and .260 blood alcohol content.
A check revealed that Fusco had previously been convicted of drunk driving charges in 2008 and 2014 in New Jersey.
Last week in Sumter County Court, Fusco pleaded no contest to the DUI charge. He was ordered to perform 80 hours of community service and is facing more than $3,000 in fines and court fees, as well as being placed on probation.
