Gainesville man taken to jail after deputies confirm suspended license, spot marijuana in car

Duston Lyn Thomas

A Gainesville man who was stopped by a Marion County deputy for an obscured license tag late Sunday night ended up in jail a short time later.

After the deputy stopped a gold four-door Honda in the 5500 block of W. Hwy. 40 in Ocala, 34-year-old Duston Lyn Thomas told him that his license was suspended for failure to pay a traffic fine, a sheriff’s office report states.

A check of Thomas’ history revealed that his license was suspended April 18 and he failed to pay a traffic fine May 15.

During a search of Thomas’ vehicle before it was towed, a deputy found a clear plastic baggy under the front passenger seat containing a green leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana.

Thomas, who denied owning the marijuana, was transported to the Marion County Jail and charged with driving with a suspended license and marijuana possession (not more than 20 grams). He was being held on $1,500 bond and is due to appear in a Marion County courtroom Aug. 30 at 8 a.m.
