You’ve probably seen Gabe and Diana Mirkin riding their tandem bicycle in The Villages.
Perhaps, you’ve been in your golf cart heading the opposite direction.
The Village of Bridgeport at Laurel Valley couple routinely rides two to three hours a day. It’s an important part of their overall fitness routine.
Fitness is something 78-year-old Dr. Gabe Mirkin has spent his whole adult life studying and pursuing.
A practicing physician for more than 40 years and a radio talk show host for 25 years, Dr. Mirkin is a graduate of Harvard University and Baylor University College of Medicine. He is a rare breed of physician in that he is board-certified in four specialties: Sports Medicine, Allergy and Immunology, Pediatrics and Pediatric Immunology.
He has run more than 40 marathons.
Wife Diana, directed the good doctor’s cooking school, teaching thousands of people how to make healthy foods taste delicious. She is co-author with him of “The Healthy Heart Miracle,” “The Whole Grains Cookbook,” “The 20/30 Fat and Fiber Diet Plan,” and “Fat Free, Flavor Full.” She has developed hundreds of recipes that follow Dr. Mirkin’s guidelines for healthy eating, featuring whole grains, beans, vegetables and fruit.
Together, they continue to share with the world a wealth of wellness information through www.drmirkin.com.
They don’t just preach a healthy lifestyle, they live it to the fullest.
They own a car, but it rarely leaves the garage.
“We are bicycle commuters. We ride the bike everywhere,” Dr. Mirkin said.
He points out that The Villages can help you live a healthier life.
“It’s a beautiful place with so much to do,” Dr. Mirkin said. “It’s the best time of my life. I have never had it so good.”
