A firearm was stolen from an unlocked vehicle at Oakleaf Villages Apartment Homes.
The owner of a 2018 four-door Nissan Maxima said his vehicle had been parked Aug. 3 and 4 at Building 20205 at the apartment complex on County Road 466 in Lady Lake when the Sig Sauer handgun was stolen, according to an incident report from the Lady Lake Police Department. The firearm had been stored within a compartment in the vehicle.
The man told police he left the vehicle’s doors unlocked and he “has never had anything stolen before.”
As the officer was investigating the theft of the gun, a call came in from dispatch indicating a second car had been burglarized at the complex.
In that case, a man saw the door of his Toyota Avalon slightly ajar and found that items had been tossed around inside the vehicle. The man said his Florida driver’s license had been taken from the vehicle, which had also been left unlocked.
This week Oakleaf management sent this notice to residents:
Dear Oakleaf Residents,
We have been notified by a few residents that their vehicles have been “ransacked”. They are describing all their things being tossed about. We have not been notified of anything being broken into or stolen.
PLEASE make sure that when you are exiting your vehicle you take an extra moment to gather your valuables or place them out of plain site. We recommend that you ALWAYS lock your vehicle.
We are doing our best to make sure all of Oakleaf residents are aware.
