An 81-year-old Villager was found face up on the golf cart path Tuesday morning after his golf cart collided with a fence at a tunnel entrance.
The accident occurred at 8:35 a.m. on the golf cart path in front of Freedom Pointe at The Villages, just south of El Camino real and east of Buenos Aires Boulevard.
Anthony Mickiewicz of the Village of Tall Trees had been at the wheel of the golf cart when the accident occurred, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol. He was alone and his was the only vehicle involved in the accident.
He had been unrestrained by a seatbelt and he was ejected onto the cement path, the FHP report indicated.
He was transported by ambulance to Ocala Regional Medical Center.
Although there initially was speculation that Mickiewicz had suffered a medical episode just prior to the accident, there was no mention of it in the final FHP report. Instead the report indicated that Mickiewicz “operated motor vehicle in careless or negligent manner.”
The New Jersey native has a valid driver’s license through 2020.
A blue handicapped parking placard was on the seat of the golf cart after the crash. A walker that was being carried on the golf cart was knocked out in the impact with the fence and tunnel wall.
