Ex-husband arrested after firing shots at new husband at home in Lady Lake

Monte Ray Smith

A woman’s ex-husband showed up and fired two shots at her new husband Tuesday morning at their home in Lady Lake.

Monte Ray Smith, 54, of Orlando, was spotted at about 5:30 a.m. at the home he previously shared with his former wife in the 100 block of Spencers Lane in Lady Lake, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department.

The woman’s new husband had stepped outside to smoke a cigarette. Smith started yelling at him from his truck, parked to the side of the home’s front yard. Smith identified himself as a “federal officer” and then said he wanted his wife and his house back. Smith pulled out a gun and fired two shots at the man, the arrest report said.

The new husband ran into his house, grabbed a shotgun and dialed 911.

The woman, who had been inside the house at the time of the shooting, told police that she and Smith were divorced 12 years ago. She said she had not seen him since the divorce. She confirmed that Smith previously lived in the home with her.

Multiple firearms were found in Smith’s vehicle.

He was arrested on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was booked at the Lake County Jail on $12,000 bond.
