Driver arrested on drunk driving charge after traffic stop on State Road 44

Mohammed Owens McDowell

A driver was arrested on a drunk driving charge after a traffic stop on State Road 44.

Mohammed Owens McDowell, 38, of Leesburg had been at the wheel of a white pickup at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday at State Road 44 and County Road 149 when he failed to maintain a single lane, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy making the traffic stop suspected McDowell had been drinking and asked him to participate in field sobriety exercises, which he failed.

He provided breath samples that registered .058 and .054 blood alcohol content.

He was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. He was released after posting $1,000 bond.
