Driver arrested on DUI charge after weekend accident in roundabout

An Indiana man was arrested on drunk driving charges after driving the wrong way in a roundabout, causing an accident Friday night in The Villages.

Randy Payne, 52, of Avilla, Ind., was driving a Chevy Trailblazer at 9:17 p.m. in the roundabout at Buena Vista Boulevard and Odell Circle when the crash occurred, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Payne drove across the grass median, struck a yield post sign and began traveling southbound in the northbound lane, entering into the path of a 2002 Ford Taurus driven by William Paul Kelley Jr., 63, of The Villages. Kelley and a passenger, 65-year-old Marilyn Louise Nesbitt, also of The Villages, escaped injury in the crash.

FHP arrived on the scene to investigate the accident and Payne refused to a breath test. He was arrested on charges of DUI and DUI property damage/personal injury. He was also ticketed on a charge of careless driving. He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center on $2,000 bond.
