“The same dietary patterns that increase risk for heart attacks also increase risk for obesity, diabetes and certain cancers,” Mirkin said.
“Recent research shows that what you eat is far more important than how much you eat. Red meat, processed meat, sugar-added foods, sugared drinks and fried foods increase risk for premature death, while eating lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, seeds and nuts helps to prolong lives and prevent disease. Calorie restriction does not keep weight off over time, but intermittent fasting appears to be highly effective in helping people to lose weight and keep it off,” he said.
Mirkin hosted a popular call-in radio show on fitness and health that was syndicated in more than 120 cities. He has written more than 20 books including The Sportsmedicine Book. His latest book is The Healthy Heart Miracle, published by HarperCollins. He wrote the chapter on sports injuries for the Merck Manual (both lay and physicians’ editions), the largest selling book worldwide with over one million copies in print. His daily short features on fitness have been heard on CBS Radio News stations since the 1970’s.
