To the Editor:
Culture Wars. Republicans have a history with culture wars. For decades most Republican policies have been very unpopular with the vast majority of the American public. They have campaigned on the George Wallace style cultural wedges rather on specific policies for the better part of the last 50 yrs. Some examples:
• Nixon’s “law and order” rhetoric was a strategy that are adjucated at state and local levels, not at the federal level.
• Reagan”s “welfare queen” was used to invoke images of a black female gaming the system.
• Rove’s “anti-gay” marriage ballot initiatives.
Enter Donald Trump. He pushes cultural wedge issues again. Border walls, Muslim bans, MS-13, immigrants, NFL players kneeling, uninviting NFL players to the WH, Pocahontas, POW’s not heroes and on and on.
Sunday, 8/12/18 there will be the White Supremacist UNITE THE RIGHT rally across the street from the White House. What will he say? What will he tweet? Probably, nothing. And why not?
