Convicted felon living in Village of Belvedere accused of theft, arrested with ammunition

Tommy Harris

A convicted felon living in the Village of Belvedere has been arrested on new theft charges.

Tommy Harris, 54, who lives at 402 Thistledown Way, was taken into custody at 5:40 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of Wal-Mart at Buffalo Ridge Plaza in The Villages.

Harris is suspected of stealing aluminum from the site of a home that had been damaged by fire in Oxford. The Ohio native allegedly loaded the aluminum in his red Ford truck and took it to Dominion Metal Recycling in Wildwood and collected $88. Images of his truck were captured on video surveillance at the recycling center. He also provided a copy of his driver’s license when he was paid for the aluminum.

Harris later agreed to meet with deputies in the Wal-Mart parking lot. He arrived in the red Ford truck.

He was taken into custody on charges of theft and dealing in stolen property. An inventory of his truck turned up a .44 caliber round of ammunition, one .357 caliber round, one 300 Winchester mag round and one shotgun shell.

He was later arrested on an additional charge of possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.

Harris is a convicted felon in the state of Florida. He was convicted in 2012 on charges of burglary, theft and dealing in stolen property.

He was booked on $16,000 bond at the Sumter County Detention Center.
