A steady crowd of Villagers filtered in and out of Monday’s “Defend Freedom” national bus tour which rolled into Savannah Center.
The event was put on by the Concerned Veterans for America and featured speakers with mostly military backgrounds.
The non-partisan group was gathering signatures on a petition calling on the White House “to stop making excuses and start delivering results.”
Sean Parnell, a former Army Ranger and author of the New York Times bestseller “Outlaw Platoon,” said he left to fight a war in Afghanistan and came home to a different America.
He warned those in attendance against apathy as the government further infringes on their rights. He claimed the current administration wants to track Americans’ communication through phone and email, restrict their right to bear arms and use the Internal Revenue Service as an intimidating force.
Another speaker, Steve Russell who is the author of “We Got Him: The Hunt and Capture of Saddam Hussein,” had a similar message.
He suggested to the audience that the America that had launched the dreams of Orville and Wilbur Wright, Charles Lindbergh and Neil Armstrong has lost its way.
He told the audience that the 20 million veterans in the country may be the nation’s “last hope.”
Nearly all of the speakers at the event received standing ovations from the audience of Villagers which numbered in the hundreds at any given time.
