A child was turned over to her father after her mother was arrested Monday afternoon at Wal-Mart in Summerfield.
Ashley Marie Schaeffer, 20, of Lady Lake, had gone through the self-checkout line and failed to scan more than $400 worth of merchandise, including two skateboards, makeup, food and clothing, according to an incident report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
Her boyfriend arrived at the store and told a deputy he had been at work, talking to Schaeffer on the phone. He believed she sounded suspicious and he went to the store to check things out, the report indicated. He took the couple’s child who had been in the company of her mother.
Schaeffer was arrested on a charge of grand retail theft and booked at the Marion County Jail.
