Cheyney S. Geren

Cheyney S. Geren, 82, of Leesburg, FL, passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 2018. She was born February 25, 1936 in Lakeland, FL. Her parents were Leonard R. Sanderson and Mary Bryan Sanderson.

Cheyney graduated from Leon High School in Tallahassee, FL and later went to The University of West Florida where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in physical education. She was very athletic and a fierce competitor. She was an outstanding runner and was the AAU Southeastern United States Women’s Marathon Champion in 1979. Cheyney was energetic and outgoing. She enjoyed people and loved playing pickleball and going dragon boating with her many friends at Hawthorne retirement community where she spent her retirement years. Cheyney had her battles in life, but never complained. She dealt with breast cancer for 27 years and never let it stop her.

She is survived by her husband John Geren, brother Leonard (Ann) Sanderson of Atlanta, GA, and children Tyla, Kelly, Casey Wells and her son Appling Wells (Lucy) of Leesburg, FL, her grandchildren Daniel Wells and Appling (Laura) Wells, great-grandchildren Evelyn, Luke and Henry Wells.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Paul’s Catholic Community Church, Leesburg, with interment to follow at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell. Date and times are pending.

The family gives special thanks to Serenades Memory Care Assisted Living in Winter Garden, FL and Hospice of the Comforter, Altamonte Springs.
