Calumet Grove residents still barred from homes nearly two weeks after sinkholes discovered

Residents of two homes in the Village of Calumet Grove remain barred from their homes since the Feb. 15 discovery of sinkholes.

Red stickers remain on their homes in the 17000 block of McLawren Terrace, but residents were reportedly allowed back in to retrieve items. The red stickers indicate the homes are not habitable.

Cracks appear to have expanded at this house on McLawren Terrace.

Large sinkholes near the houses have been filled in. A large portable pump has been moved into the street in front of the damaged homes. This was done because the storm drain was blocked by the sinkholes. The pump will keep the drain from filling up as the pumped water will be directed out of the drain and into the pond behind the houses.

A portable pump has been put in place to remove runoff from the blocked storm drain.

The pond behind the damaged homes was drained when two sinkholes opened the same day the homes were damaged. Remedial work on the sinkholes in the pond is nearing completion. Once the holes are repaired a new liner will be put in place.

Work continues at the pond where sinkholes opened up earlier this month.
