Bob Gene Cherry

Bob Gene Cherry, of The Villages, FL, beloved husband of Marianne Cherry died on May 9, 2018 at his home with his wife by his side. Bob was the son of Thomas B. Cherry and Mary Ellen, nee Townsend, brother of Bill Cherry and Pauline Dotson who predeceased him.

Bob graduated from Claremore OK High School. Upon graduation he entered the U. S. Army and spent most of his 21 years with Special Forces, serving 3 tours in Vietnam. He was a quiet unpretentious man never mentioning his many awards such as the Bronze Star w/Device; Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal w/3 Oak Leaf Cluster; Good Conduct Medal; 4th AWD and many more.

After his military retirement Bob was employed as senior claims adjuster at Republic/Winterthur Insurance Group of Dallas, TX.

Besides playing golf, traveling and nature walks, he enjoyed being with family and many friends and comrades.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 52 years and her loving family from Germany with whom Bob had a very special relationship. He is also survived by his dear sister, Betty L. England and her family and sister-in-law, JoAnne Cherry and her family all of Claremore, OK and many nieces and nephews in both Oklahoma and Germany.

He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church where a Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 1, 2018 at 10 a.m. His final resting place will be at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org) or to Cornerstone Hospice (cshospice.org), Florida.
