Bicyclist dies days after being hit by semi-truck in Alachua County

A bicyclist who was struck by a semi-truck in Alachua County on Monday has died.

Brian T. Angell, 74, of Hawthorne, was pronounced dead at UF Health Shands Hospital on Wednesday. He had been ejected from his bicycle and seriously injured when the trailer of a 2001 Freightliner Century semi-truck hit him on County Road 325 early Monday morning.

The truck’s driver, 59-year-old Otto Wettstein, was attempting to go around Angell’s bicycle when the incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m., a Florida Highway Patrol report states.

Angell, who was ejected from his bicycle, initially suffered serious injuries in the crash. Wettstein, of Fort McCoy, wasn’t injured. It is not known if alcohol was involved in the crash and charges are pending, the FHP report says.
