A 72-year-old Villager was arrested after he allegedly pushed his live-in girlfriend out of a golf cart while driving in the Village of Amelia.

John Francis Bessette and his girlfriend had been at City Fire on Saturday night and got into an argument afterward while traveling in the golf cart, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman and a witness said Bessette braked hard in the golf cart and pushed the woman out on Darwin Terrace.

However, Bessette said he had stopped  the golf cart and allowed the woman to safely exit the vehicle.

He was arrested on a charge of battery and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. He was released Sunday night after posting $5,000 bond.
