More than 200 riders join in benefit at Spanish Springs to support hospital’s new Urgent Care center

More than 200 riders took off from Spanish Springs Town Square on Saturday to participate in the Hearts for our Hospital Bicycle Challenge.  This is the first year for this event. The bicycling community is committed to raising $75,000 for The Villages Regional Hospital Auxiliary.

The riders took off on this crispy autumn morning cheered on by The Villages Cheerleaders. Riders had the option to take part in 64-, 32- or 17-mile rides. Villager Dusty Huxford for one is glad to have the opportunity to ride the 64 mile route in cooler weather.  Pamela Powell began riding 33 days ago and was sporting a new bike for her planned 32-mile route.

Twenty volunteer road marshals identified by the yellow antennas extending from their helmets were on hand throughout the route to assist with flat tires, accidents and navigating the routes.

“The hospital touches everyone’s lives; it is a fun way to give back to the community we dearly love,” said Villager Dave Taylor, co-chair of the cycling portion of the event.

Money was raised by entry fees, pledges for miles ridden and over 40 corporate sponsors. Ralph Corso raised $500 in pledges.

Executive Director of the Auxiliary Foundation Dick Campbell noted that the cycling community has been a ‘superb partner’ coordinating this event.
