Carl Ayers of Spruce Creek South has been waiting a long time to be able to cross U.S. Hwy. 27/441 in his golf cart.
So on the day it became legal to cross the highway at SE 175th Place in a non-Street Legal golf cart, he loaded up his wife and took off.
“I went across at 9 a.m. on the first day it was open and went over to Wal-Mart, Aldi’s and Lowe’s and my doctor’s office then I turned around and came back,” Ayers said.
Thanks in large part to the determination of the Marion County Board of Commissioners, golf carts can now cross at that location, which is also the entrance to Spruce Creek South.
The new rule went into place this past Thursday, according to Marion County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Louis Pulford.
It was a long time coming for residents of Spruce Creek South who have longed to get across the highway in their golf carts.
The Florida Department of Transportation had to give its blessing and the commissioners had to work with local property owners to make the change a reality.
