The Lady Lake Commission has unanimously voted to approve an ordinance cracking down on where sex offenders can live in the town.
Chief of Police Robert Tempesta presented the ordinance Monday night before the commission.
The existing ordinance already provides that sex offenders cannot establish a permanent residence within 2,500 feet of a public school, church, daycare center, park, playground or library.
However, the revised ordinance inserts the word “private,” and could extend the prohibition on where sex offenders can live to within 2,500 feet of private parks such as Boone Park, Schwartz Park or Paradise Park on the Historic Side of The Villages.
The ordinance notes that sex offenders “are an extreme threat to the public safety.”

A check of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement shows that there are currently 73 registered sex offenders within a five-mile radius of Lady Lake Town Hall.
A second reading of the ordinance prior to final adoption will take place at 6 p.m. May 20 before the commission.
