When 85-year-old Kathryn Ross died last year, she left behind a courtyard villa, now in foreclosure.
The courtyard villa, located at 1005 Avalon Avenue in the Village of El Cortez, was the subject of a public hearing Wednesday afternoon before the Village Center Community Development District.
Ross died June 28 and a two-line obituary offers few clues about her life.
What is known is that the utilities have been shut off, the property is in foreclosure with the U.S. Housing and Urban Department and all emergency contacts Ross left with the Villages District office have been disconnected.
A complaint was received Sept. 7 by Community Standards indicating that weeds were growing at the property.
The VCCDD board voted unanimously to fine the property owner $250 if the property is not brought into compliance within three days. The board also gave Community Standards authority to maintain the property twice a month in the summer and once a month in the winter and impose a $250 fine each time. If the fines reach $1,500, the matter will be turned over to District counsel.
These types of cases have been known to drag on and become a problem for neighbors.
