Sumter County Fire and EMS has announced the retirement of Battalion Chief Jerry Rhoden, who dedicated more than 40 years to public safety. Chief Rhoden’s final day with Sumter County Fire and EMS was Thursday.
Chief Rhoden began his career as a firefighter in 1985 at Eustis Fire Department and had a distinguished career as a paramedic with Florida Regional EMS, which transitioned to Lake Sumter EMS. He worked there for 18 years and worked his way up to the rank of District Chief. In 2005, Chief Rhoden served with Minneola Fire Rescue as a driver engineer, eventually progressing to Fire Captain and EMS Coordinator.
Chief Rhoden started volunteering with Lake Panasoffkee Fire Department before Sumter County unified all volunteer fire departments in 2002 under one Fire Chief, and a new organization called Sumter County Fire and EMS emerged. He rose quickly through the ranks, becoming a Battalion Chief in 2011. He has been a leader and a mentor to many firefighters and paramedics, as well as a respected and trusted partner to other public safety agencies. He has been involved in numerous major incidents, such as wildfires, hurricanes and mass casualty events; saved countless people that required emergency care; and always demonstrated professionalism, courage and compassion.
Chief Rhoden was instrumental in developing and enhancing the department’s training, operations and equipment capabilities. He was a strong advocate for the safety and wellness of the department’s personnel and the community. He has received several awards and recognitions for his outstanding service and achievements, including the Fire Chief’s Award, the Fire Officer of the Year Award, the Meritorious Service Medal, and multiple Distinguished Unit Citations.
“Chief Rhoden is a legend in the fire service and a hero to many. He has made a tremendous impact on our department, our community and me,” said Deputy Fire Chief Damon Allen, Sumter County Fire and EMS. “We are grateful for his dedication and leadership. He will be greatly missed, but we wish him all the best in his retirement.”
Chief Rhoden plans to spend more time with his family and pursue his hobbies, such as fishing, boating and traveling.
