George David Reed

George D. “Rip” Reed, of The Villages, Florida, passed away Nov. 1, 2022.

George was born on December 21,1930 in Quakertown, PA to Harold and Mamie (Kramer) Reed of Pennsburg, PA. George is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Doris E (Schmuck) Reed.

George graduated from Pennsburg High School in 1948 and attended Pierce Business School, graduating in 1950 with a degree in Administrative Accountancy.

After serving 2 years in the Army, he worked for Firestone Tire & Rubber Company in Pottstown, PA in the Data Processing Department, advancing to Manager. When Firestone left the Pottstown area, he worked for Occidental Chemical Company as Director of MIS. Upon retirement from Occidental Chemical Company, he worked part time for the Pottstown School District.

In earlier years George was active in Scouting, advancing to Senior Scout and Sea Scout. He was instrumental in setting up Data Processing Senior Scouting for Firestone as well as the Data Processing Course for Western Montgomery County Vo-Tech School. He was a Deacon for New Goshenhoppen United Church of Christ, serving 4 years. He was a member of New Goshenhoppen Reformed United Church of Christ in East Greenville, PA and Hope Lutheran Church in The Villages, FL.

He is survived by daughter, Donna Hiryak, wife of Peter and son, David Reed, husband of Anita, grandchildren, Ryan Frey, husband of Sara, Ashlee Frey, Kristen Reed, Chelsea Pavone, wife of Christopher, and Kyle Reed. He is also survived by great grandson, Blaise Frey and great granddaughter, Riley Pavone, and two step grandsons, Eric Hiryak and Dane Hiryak.

George was a member of the Elks #814 of Pottstown, Pottstown German Club, Pottstown Quoit Club and the American Legion #347 of Lady Lake, FL.

Moving to Florida 28 years ago, he enjoyed golfing, spending time at the local pool, dining out, and playing cards with friends.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to New Goshenhoppen UCC, 1070 Church Rd., East Greenville, PA 18041.

A memorial service will be held in PA at a later date.
