COVID-19 strikes Villages and Summerfield again as state sees spike in cases

Another Villager and two more Summerfield residents have tested positive for the Coronavirus as the tri-county area and Florida saw an increase Thursday in new cases.

The tri-county area reported 912 COVID-19 cases Thursday – an increase of 19 in a 24-hour period. That marks the biggest single-day increase since Gov. Ron DeSantis announced June 3 that Florida was entering the second phase of his reopening plan. Those tri-county cases are divided among 472 men, 418 women and 22 non-residents. There have been 40 deaths and 171 people have been hospitalized.

The latest Villages residents to test positive for COVID-19 lives in the Lake County portion of the sprawling retirement mecca. No specific information about the patient was provided by the Florida Department of Health on Thursday but that person is presumed to be among the 17 new patients identified since Wednesday, which include:

  • 48-year-old female with an unknown travel history;
  • 34-year-old female with an unknown travel history;
  • 35-year-old female with an unknown travel history;
  • 26-year-old man with an unknown travel history;
  • 79-year-old female with no travel history nor contact with another patient;
  • 65-year-old female with an unknown travel history who had been in contact with another patient;
  • 79-year-old female with an unknown travel history;
  • 32-year-old male with an unknown travel history;
  • 16-year-old male with an unknown travel history who had been in contact with another patient;
  • 21-year-old female with an unknown travel history;
  • 19-year-old female with an unknown travel history who had been in contact with another patient;
  • 47-year-old male with an unknown travel history;
  • 55-year-old female with an unknown travel history;
  • 19-year-old male with an unknown travel history;
  • 72-year-old male with an unknown travel history;
  • 45-year-old female with an unknown travel history;
  • 65-year-old female with an unknown travel history.

Overall, Lake County is reporting 355 cases among 162 men, 178 women and 15 non-residents. There have been 15 deaths and 83 people have required some form of hospital care.

Ten of the Lake County cases are in The Villages, with another 18 in Lady Lake and six in Fruitland Park. Others have been identified in Clermont (109), Leesburg (48), Eustis (40), Tavares (23), Mount Dora (22), Groveland (20), Mascotte (14), Minneola (8), Sorrento (6), Montverde (4), Howey-in-the-Hills (3), Altoona (2), Okahumpka (1), Umatilla (3), Grand Island (1), Paisley (1) and Yalaha (1).

The two new Summerfield cases are among 32 reported in the Marion County community that’s located just outside The Villages and contains the retirement communities of Del Webb Spruce Creek, Stonecrest and Spruce Creek South. Patients identified since Wednesday in Marion County include:

  • 62-year-old Summerfield female with no travel history who had been in contact with another patient;
  • 66-year-old Summerfield male with no travel history who had been in contact with another patient;
  • 65-year-old Summerfield male with an unknown travel history;
  • 28-year-old Ocala female with an unknown travel history; and
  • 30-year-old Ocala female with no travel history.

As of Thursday, Marion County was reporting 292 cases among 123 men, 164 women and five non-residents. There have been eight deaths and 43 people have been hospitalized.
Besides the Summerfield cases, two of the Marion County patients have been identified in The Villages. The overwhelming majority of cases – 206 – have been reported in Ocala, with others located in Dunnellon (14), Citra (10), Belleview (9), Ocklawaha (4), Anthony (3), Reddick (2), Silver Springs (2) and Fort McCoy (1).

Sumter County held steady Thursday at 265 cases among 187 men, 76 women and 22 non-residents. There have been 17 deaths and 45 people have required some form of hospital care.

Sixty-nine of the Sumter County cases are in The Villages, with another 122 reported in Bushnell. But all but one of those cases have been reported at the Sumter Correctional Institution (105 inmates and 16 staff members).

Other Sumter County cases have been identified in Lake Panasoffkee (22), Oxford (19), Wildwood (9), Webster (8), Lady Lake portion of the county (6), Sumterville (5) and Coleman (3). The federal prison in Coleman also has identified six cases among four staff members and two inmates.

All told, Florida is reporting 69,069 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 1,698 in a 24-hour period. Of those, 65,779 are residents. There have been 2,848 deaths and 11,571 people have been hospitalized across the Sunshine State.
