I would like to meet the two deputies who gave you that advice. Want to be in an accident fast; follow their advice.
When you are approaching an intersection with a stop sign in a cart lane, about 50 – 100 feet from the intersection, you should merge into the auto lane (using turn signal, of course). When your turn comes, make your left turn if traffic allows.
To stay in the cart lane until you get to the intersection means you will have to cross the auto lane next to you, which is the equivalent of making a left turn from a right lane. Good luck!!
