A 62-year-old woman claims her mentally disabled adult son was abducted from the Summerfield Wal-Mart and then kicked out of a car at a nearby fast-food restaurant.
The woman called a Marion County sheriff’s deputy for help on Monday and told him that she and her 31-year-old son were at the cash register in the store on Oct. 9 getting ready to check out. She said she was holding her son’s hand before she briefly let go and he walked over to a wall near the restrooms inside the store, located at 17961 S U.S. Hwy. 27/441.
The woman said she remained at the cash register waiting for a gift card and once she had it, she realized her son was missing. She said a Wal-Mart manager quickly locked down the store and helped her search for him.
The woman said someone then apparently called into the sheriff’s office to report her son being found at the Sonic Drive-In restaurant at 11211 SE 178th Place – right outside the boundaries of the Wal-Mart parking lot. The woman said she went to the eatery and found her son with a Sonic manager, a sheriff’s office report states.
The woman said the manager told her that her son was in a silver sedan and was kicking and screaming. The manager said someone then pushed him out of the vehicle and sped off, the report says.
The woman said she believes her son was lured into the vehicle and taken. She said he has been unable to tell her what happened due to his disability, the report says.
The woman said she has called numerous times to follow up on the incident. The deputy told her he would generate a suspicious incident case that would remain active, the report says.
