A Village of Gilchrist resident who relies on specialized golf carts is upset with The Villages Golf Division.
Tom Hart, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, said he still is able to enjoy playing golf in Florida’s Friendliest Hometown because he can rent a SoloRider golf cart for $3 to play nine holes. He said the carts, which offer features like swivel and tilt seats, a modified bag holder and specialized hand controls, are perfect for people with MS, those who have had a stroke or anyone suffering from a loss of balance.
But Hart said The Villages Golf Division made a recent change in the carts that are creating issues for those who rely on them. He said he noticed the change after The Villages took back the Golf Division late last year from Golf Management Solutions, a private corporation formed by Ken and Timothy Creely that had overseen the operation for a decade ago.
“They always had a retractable roof on them, which could be put on or taken off if requested for nicer weather,” Hart said. “When The Villages took over from GMS, someone decided in his new position to save a couple of man hour dollars and eliminate the roofs.”
Hart said that change has created huge hardships for those who count on the use of the specialized golf carts.
“When it’s pouring rain out and the temperatures get up in the high 90s, we have no protection,” he said. “I guess when someone passes out from the heat – or worse – they might reconsider.”
Meanwhile, Hart said he’s been forced to adapt to the change to continue enjoying the game.
“My buddies and I have jury-rigged an umbrella on the SoloRider with quick ties to give me some protection,” he said.
