Community groups join forces to benefit students at Summerfield elementary school

Members of the Rotary Club of The Villages Evening and The Sophisticated Gents of Florida are working together to benefit a Summerfield elementary school.

Members of both groups met recently at Harbour View Elementary School to discuss their common interest in helping students succeed. Principal Robert Hensel and Assistant Principals Sarah Dobbs and Mitzi Smith shared the needs of their school.

Members of the Rotary Club of The Villages Evening and The Sophisticated Gents of Florida have made a commitment to work together to benefit students at Harbour View Elementary School in Summerfield. And members of the Hispanic American Club of The Villages are likely to join the effort.

The Rotarians have been volunteering and providing a variety of support to Harbour View this past school year. The Gents currently provide mentoring in middle and high schools in three local counties. And after two meetings, the two organizations agreed to work together at Harbour View.

Each organization will provide members for the School Advisory Council (SAC). And the Hispanic American Club of The Villages is likely to join the effort.

Providing mentoring support to Harbor View will be the Gents’ first venture into an elementary school environment. They are hoping to augment that mentoring effort with support from the Hispanic American Club to specifically address the challenges faced by Hispanic students enrolled at the school.

Harbour View Elementary’s administrative staff met with members of the Rotary Club of The Villages Evening, The Sophisticated Gents of Florida and the Hispanic American Club of The Villages to discuss ways to benefit students.

“This will be a real help to our SAC,” Hensel said. “These organizations bring an expertise and new ideas that will help our staff and students.”

The groups also agreed that more volunteers are needed in Summerfield and Weirsdale area schools for tutoring and mentoring. Those interested in finding out more information can contact Sue Bodenner at [email protected] or Otis Lane at [email protected].
