Late-night blaze chars wooden viewing stand at preserve in The Villages

A late-night fire on Sunday damaged a wooden viewing platform at the Sharon Rose Wiechens Preserve off Moyer Loop in The Villages.

Flames damaged a wooden viewing stand at the Sharon Rose Wiechens Preserve on Sunday night.

Fire crews from The Villages Public Safety Department received a call for a possible structure fire shortly after 11 p.m. and when they arrived at the preserve, located at 434 Moyer Loop, flames were engulfing the viewing stand.

The blaze, which was believed to be accidental, was quickly knocked down. It damaged both the first and second floor of the viewing stand and remains under investigation by the Lake County fire marshal. It is unclear how long the stand, which is marked off with yellow tape, will remain closed for repairs.
