Summerfield woman jailed after neighbor sees her slap man across the face

Alexis Miranda Mitchell

A Summerfield woman found herself behind bars Tuesday night after a neighbor saw her slap a man in the face twice behind her home.

When Marion County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the residence, located on SE 65th Court, 29-year-old Alexis Miranda Mitchell told them that she and a man had been yelling at each other but “she never touched the victim and the victim never touched her,” a sheriff’s office report states.

They man told deputies that he was packing his belongings when Mitchell came home. He said she tried to stop him by getting in his way with her hands but did not hit him. And he said that she gave him a “mean hug” while he was working underneath his truck but he didn’t believe it was meant to hurt him, the report says.

A witness who lives nearby said he was inside his home replacing flooring when he heard shouting coming from Mitchell’s house. He said he stepped out behind his residence and saw Mitchell slapping the man’s face, the report says.

The witness said the man told Mitchell to get away from him as he backed away from her but she charged at him and slapped him again. He said the man never struck Mitchell and “appeared to make every effort to stay away” from her, the report says, adding that he doesn’t know Mitchell or the man.

Deputies took Mitchell into custody and after being placed inside a patrol vehicle, she claimed the man had punched her in the arm after she first arrived at her house. When asked why she told deputies the man hadn’t hit her, she said she didn’t know he was going to tell the deputy that she hit him, the report says.

Mitchell was transported to the Marion County Jail, where she was charged with domestic battery. She was released late Wednesday afternoon on her own recognizance and is due in a Marion County courtroom on May 17 at 9 a.m. to answer to the charges.
