Man fires shots at SWAT team before turning gun on himself

A 61-year-old man fired several shots Sunday night at members of the Sumter County sheriff’s SWAT team before turning the gun on himself.

Deputies responded at 10:30 p.m. to a domestic dispute in Lake Panasoffkee, where the man refused to cooperate and fired a round out of the front door of the residence.

The SWAT team arrived with hostage negotiators. However, the man refused to communicate with the negotiators.

The suspect then fired several rounds from inside his residence at members of the SWAT team, striking the SWAT vehicle multiple times. He then turned the gun on himself. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
