Truck driver rescued from river by airboat after crash that shut down I-75 in Sumter County

The driver of a semi was rescued Monday afternoon from the Withlacoochee River after a crash shut down Interstate 75 in Sumter County.

The semi from Soil Tech Distributors of Tampa at 1 p.m. had been northbound at Mile Marker 307 when the driver lost control and struck a concrete barrier on the bridge spanning the Withlacoochee River, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The cab of the truck fell into the river and the driver, who has not been identified, was rescued by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office’s Airboat Team.

The tractor portion remained suspended from the bridge by the trailer, FHP said.
