Sumter County Sheriff’s Office announces Withlacoochee River public boat ramp closures post-Irma flooding

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has announced Withlacoochee River public boat ramp closures due to Hurricane Irma.

The Withlacoochee River has flooded in the area of Iron Bridge to the CSX railroad bridge, and the river flood level 15 feet in the area, currently at 15.2 feet, according to a media release. The river flood level is expected to rise to 17.3 feet. The area is currently closed to any public vessel excluding emergency evacuation efforts.

The Citrus/Hernando County line to the River RV Park flood level is at 11 feet, and is currently at 9.32 feet. The river is not expected to exceed that closure limit.

As little as six inches of water can knock a person down, and a lot of water can move a vehicle, the release stated. SCEM is advising citizens to avoid flooded roads and to use caution and common sense while driving.

Residents in these flooding areas are urged to take the necessary protective actions and evacuate if needed. A shelter for displaced residents has been opened at the Sumter County Fairgrounds. For more information, contact the Sumter County Citizens’ Information Line at 352-569-3190.
