John Stevens Buzzell

John Stevens Buzzell, 93, of The Villages, Florida, passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2017. John was the son of Harry K and Rosalie C. Buzzell. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 19, 1924.

He graduated from Waseca High School in 1942. He received his B.A. Degree from The University of Minnesota in 1949 and received his Masters’ Degree in Social Welfare from Florida State University in 1965.

John served in the Army Air Forces from 1943 to 1945. In 1950 he married Shirley M. Wharton in Brainerd, Minnesota. He worked as a social worker in Minnesota until he received his Masters. At that time he began working as an administrator for the State of Minnesota.

John’s interests included steam locomotive restoration. He was a brakeman and an engine wiper which lead to becoming an engineer in Campo, California. He helped build homes for Habitat for Humanity and he volunteered at Paul Newman’s Camp for sick children.

Through the years John participated in Episcopal Church services where the family lived.
He was an active member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Fruitland Park, Florida.

He is survived by his wife Shirley, daughter Debbie Stanton and her husband Lee, son Jeffrey and his wife Janese, son Randy and his wife Rosa and 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

The visitation will be Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Beyers Funeral Home in Lady Lake. The Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, May 1, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Fruitland Park. Lunch will be served following the service. The Celebration will conclude with the burial at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.
