William K. Russ

William K. Russ, of The Villages, FL, passed away on November 7, 2016 after a long and brave fight against cancer.

Bill, son of Gladys and Elwood Russ, was born on October 3, 1951 in Washington, DC. The family moved to Silver Spring, MD where he lived until graduating from the University of Maryland.

He started work as a Budget Analyst at the National Institute of Health and continued his career there for many years. When he retired in 2005, he had served as the Executive Officer of three different Institutes of NIH.

For many years he enjoyed his love of scuba, diving the wrecks off the east coast as well as in many island locations. He became a certified scuba instructor and came to love teaching and passing his love of diving to many students.

After moving to The Villages in 2006, he soon became involved in many activities. He was an accomplished card player and enjoyed golf, but softball became his true passion. He was also a team leader with The Villages Special Events Staff. He will be missed by many friends.

He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Bette Boggess. Survivors include his longtime companion, Susan Nelson and her children, Christopher Mueller and Michael Mueller, niece Carol Boggess and nephew William Boggess.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Cornerstone Hospice of The Villages.

A memorial service with reception will take place at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, 1511 Buenos Aires Blvd, The Villages, FL 32159 on Monday, December 5, 2016 at 11 a.m.
