Bridget Logan, chemistry teacher at the Villages High School, was honored Saturday at the Barnes & Noble My Favorite Teacher Contest. Students could submit essays, poems or thank-you letters nominating their favorite teacher.
The winning submission was a poem by Villages High School senior Cassie Mead. She had Miss Logan as a teacher in both her sophomore and junior years. When Cassie learned about the contest, she said she thought of Logan because of her fun experiments and the fact that she is a cool teacher.
Logan is a veteran teacher of 32 years. She taught most of that time in Birmingham, Ala. Now a resident of the Village of Belle Aire, she resumed teaching after moving to The Villages.
“I enjoy teaching at the Charter School because it is so student and community centered, she said. “There is a real strive for excellence and a real caring for the whole student body.”
Logan arrived knowing she was receiving the award, but not knowing which student had nominated her.
Cassie’s poem describing her as a teacher begins “Miss Logan is awesome because she is crazy / Sometimes the classroom gets a bit hazy / Through all the cool experiments we perform / They normally turn out in perfect form.” She goes on to describe blowing up marshmallows and setting buckets on fire; she also goes on to describe how helpful and caring Logan was while making learning fun.
“It is an honor to be thought of,” Logan said.
She added that Cassie is a great student “always smiling, always pleasant.” Cassie is graduating this spring with a 4.667 GPA. Although she has not firmly decided where she will be headed this fall, she has been accepted at the University of Florida Honors Program. A well-rounded student Cassie is a soccer player and is currently performing in her last high school theater production.
Heather Hooper, the Children’s Department Lead, presented Cassie with a certificate and Logan received a plaque. The contest continues to the regional and then the national level.
The event was held on Saturday to kick off Educator Appreciation days at Barnes & Noble running through April 17.
