John Belushi would have loved it.
The Saturday Night Dance Club of The Villages held its first toga party over the weekend, and judging by the packed ballroom at the Eisenhower Recreation Center, it was almost as much fun as Belushi’s 1978 movie “Animal House.”
Everyone in the club showed up in a toga.
Belushi brought togas back in fashion again and so did the Saturday Night Dance Club. Chris Bill, leader of the club, said it was believed to be the first toga party in The Villages. She added that the toga party tradition goes back far before “Animal House” to the Roosevelt Administration almost 80 years ago.
“Our toga party was a huge success,” Bill said. Her husband, Roy Bill, plays in the band Vinyl Recall. He and the other band member also donned togas in keeping with the spirit of the evening.
Bluto, the character made famous by Belushi, might say the dance club toga party was cooler than a “food fight.”
