Lake Cortez reopening after tests come back clear after waste water spill

Lake Cortez has been cleared for reopening after a waste water spill.

Samples of the water from the lake in the Village of Mira Mesa have been cleared by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

A crew was working on a lift station and was removing a malfunctioning sewage pump when a defective shut-off valve for the pump allowed sewage to backflow into the station. This caused some effluent to escape into the parking lot that had a storm water inlet, according to the District Office.
