The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has been writing more tickets in The Villages, and that number is probably going to keep rising.
“We see more and more people, so with more people the number of violations keeps going up,” said. Lt. Nehemiah Wolfe.
From July to September, his deputies wrote 900 tickets to automobile drivers and 65 tickets to golf cart drivers.
Many of the tickets were for stop sign violations (officially known as “violation of traffic control device.”) That carries a fine of $266.
Many of the golf cart violations have been for golf carts rigged to exceed the 20 mph speed limit, Wolfe said.
He has had one motorcycle patrol unit in The Villages and is about to add another.
And the speeders have been way over the posted limit, he said.
“We encourage people to slow down and take their time. With snowbirds returning, it’s going to be even more important,” he said.
