$1.8 million fire station expansion spurred by new nursing homes, assisted living facilities

An existing fire station in The Villages is slated for a $1.8 million expansion due to the proliferation of nearby nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

County Road 466 has seen an explosion of multi-story residential care facilities.

Fire Station 40 is a 3,288 square foot building which houses an engine and a rescue apparatus.

“In order to adequately provide the proper fire protection for that response area, the existing aerial apparatus needs to be placed at that station along with additional personnel,” District Manger Janet Tutt told Village Center Community Development District supervisors on Wednesday.

That means adding additional bay space to house the needed aerial apparatus. It also means increasing the living area of the station to accommodate additional staffing to meet both current and future needs for growth of the department.

The station expansion will add an additional 3,212 square feet for a total of 6,500 square feet. The estimated cost of construction is $1.8 million.

In November 2016, the Sumter Landing Community Development District received a portion of land on Parr Drive from The Villages of Lake-Sumter, Inc. which will allow the expansion of Fire Station 40.
