A Fruitland Park woman who had a toddler and two other children with her was arrested July 14 after Lady Lake police officers were called to the Belk department store in The Villages.
When officers arrived, the store’s loss prevention officer told them he had watched Kaila J. Adams via a surveillance camera as she concealed several items valued at $921.70, a Lady Lake Police reports states.
The loss prevention officer said he watched Adams, who turned 28 Thursday, remove the packaging from cosmetic items and put them in her pocket. He also said she removed the hangers from several clothing items and placed them in a gray backpack/diaper bag.
After Adams left the store, the loss prevention officer said he made contact with her, escorted her to his office and removed the items she allegedly hadn’t paid for from her bag, the police report says.
Adams, who lives at 4546 Pine St., was advised to have someone come pick up her children and while on the phone with her father, she was heard saying, “Because I walked out of Belks with something that’s not mine and I didn’t pay for it,” the report says.
After her father picked up the three children, Adams was taken into custody, transported to the Lake County Jail and charged with retail theft (second offense following an arrest in October 2014 on a shoplifting charge). She was released a short time later on $5,000 bond.
