If beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, then everyone’s eyes agreed on the artistry and creativity of six high school students as they received scholarships from the Visual Arts Association, Friday morning at La Hacienda Recreation Center.
Their awards, ranging from $1,000 to $3,000, were based on the quality of the students’ art; their academic performance; community involvement; and personal interviews.
“Those honored, Daea Anton, who was unable to attend Friday’s program; Victoria Radnothy; Christine Reynolds; Cali Robins; Ashlyn Stout; and Veronica Vintilla represented schools from the tri-county area,” said Helen Poor, the event’s chair. “They will attend college or art school to continue their artistic pursuits in career fields such as graphic design, computer animation, and sequential art.”
“All together, including today’s presentations, we have awarded 58 scholarships totaling $116,000,” she added.
The club’s scholarship program was created by a family member’s endowment 14 years ago. Now, the fund is primarily supported by the Association’s activities such as art sales and raffles, along with proceeds from “special movie nights” at the Rialto Theatre and staged presentations at the Savannah Center.
For the first time, the Association also sponsored a scholarship for VAA members. The lucky recipient, Shirley Jerez, was chosen by drawing. She received $200 to attend an art class or an Enrichment Academy program.
