Villagers win temporary reprieve from fence that was to go up at unofficial dog park

Villagers who enjoy taking their dogs and golf carts to an unofficial dog park will be allowed to enjoy that privilege a little bit longer.

A fence was going to be put up at the unofficial dog park near a retention pond behind The Villages Regional Hospital and near Freedom Pointe.

The Amenity Authority Committee had voted to put up a $17,000 fence to prevent golf carts from entering the property. During the drought, golf carts had damaged the thirsty turf.

However, at Wednesday’s meeting, AAC members agreed to postpone putting up the fence.

With rain returning, AAC members agreed to wait 30 to 60 days and see if the deterioration of the grass ends.

However, District officials expressed concern at hearing reports of unleashed dogs running on the property. District Manager Janet Tutt noted that dogs should be leashed and warned that animal control might be contacted.
