Villagers will have chance to learn about sinkholes in presentation later this month

Villagers will have the opportunity to learn about sinkholes in a presentation later this month in The Villages.

Sinkholes were a hot topic Friday at a pair of Community Development District meetings. CDD 2 supervisors heard from a roomful of residents about a problematic pond continually drained by sinkholes. CDD 4 continues to cope with problems stemming from sinkholes that have left two homes unlivable in the Village of Calumet Grove.

A sinkhole opened up in 2014 on Chalmer Terrace in the Village of Buttonwood.

John Thompson, founder of Good Foundation Florida, will be talking about sinkhole risk and financial involvement in a program at 7 p.m. Aug. 28. The program is being put on by the Property Owners Association.

This is an encore performance of a program offered in July, when people had to be turned away because the room was at capacity.

The POA opted to offer a second sinkhole program after the planned speakers for August, The Villages Regional Hospital Vice President Michael Pittman and Director of Nursing Nancy Williams, canceled their appearance.
