Villager Larry Grimes is hoping to see a change at Morse Circle following a golf cart accident in January in which he was seriously injured.
After breakfast at Denny’s on the morning of Jan. 18, he and his golf foursome were heading to the Silver Lake Executive Course.
At Morse Circle off U.S. Hwy. 27/441, his golf cart collided with one of the steel posts after he was blinded by the sun.
Grimes was thrown from the cart and was taken by ambulance to Ocala Regional Medical Center. The 81-year-old suffered a concussion and three fractured ribs. His children had to come down and take care of him during his convalescence period. His golfing buddy riding with him in the cart that day suffered a shoulder injury.
Grimes said he has been driving 64 years and has been a Villager since 1998.
“So it’s not like I am unfamiliar with driving in The Villages,” he said.
Grimes took his concerns to Community Development District 1 on Friday morning. But he was told that the circle is under the jurisdiction of the Village Center Community Development District.
He also learned that the district is already looking into the matter.
“We are working on that situation,” said District Property Manager Sam Wartinbee.
Grimes said he is concerned that those particular beams are made of steel.
“The other posts are plastic and would break apart in a collision like mine,” Grimes said.
He said he will stay on top of this issue until something is done.
“I don’t want someone to go through what I have gone through,” Grimes said.
