Villager who crashed into light pole on Colony Boulevard sentenced in drunk driving case

Deborah Knapp

A Village of Sanibel woman whose vehicle crashed into a light pole on Colony Boulevard last month has been sentenced on a charge of driving under the influence.

A gray Buick driven by 58-year-old Deborah Knapp on Jan. 18 struck the light pole near the BB&T Bank. She was crying and incoherent when Sumter County sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene. She refused to take part in field sobriety exercises. She did not provide a sufficient breath sample. The deputy found that Knapp had been convicted in 2007 on a DUI charge in Maryland.

Last week in Sumter County Court, Knapp pleaded no contest to a charge of driving under the influence.

She will lose her driver’s license for six months, has been placed on probation for one year and has been ordered to perform 50 hours of community service.
