Villager cites death of her mother as reason for kicking sheriff’s deputy

Mary Margaret Boland

A Villager who was arrested Sunday after kicking a law enforcement officer blamed the attack on the death of her mother one year ago.

The longtime boyfriend of 65-year-old Mary Margaret Boland summoned Sumter County sheriff’s deputies at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday to their home at 220 Estrada Place in the Village of Rio Ponderosa. The boyfriend told deputies that Boland “made multiple statements of threatening to end her life,” according to the arrest report.

When deputies found Boland in a back bedroom, she was “emotionally upset and became erratic” when she realized why they were there. She was told she needed to go with EMS personnel, but Boland responded, “You’ll have to take me by force.” When they attempted to escort her from the room, she turned and kicked a deputy in the upper right thigh area. Boland was then told she was being arrested for battery on a law enforcement officer.

Good, I would rather go to jail anyways,” she responded.

She then said she was sorry and “was under distress dealing with the death of her mother that occurred one year ago.”

She was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center and released Monday afternoon after posting $5,000 bond.
