A 64-year-old Village of Lake Deaton woman was arrested after she allegedly tried to use a crow bar to pry open a bedroom door her husband had locked to keep her out.

Wanda Hare is facing a felony charge of aggravated assault following the incident Friday night at the couple’s home on Ivey Terrace.

A Sumter County sheriff’s deputy arrived at the home at 8:53 p.m. and saw Hare driving away in a black Jeep Cherokee. The deputy tried to flag Hare down, but she refused to stop, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. The deputy entered the home and found that Hare’s husband was locked in a bedroom and had pushed a dresser up against the door. The deputy also spotted a crowbar and hammer on the opposite side of the door.

The husband told the deputy that he and Hare had been at a birthday party and he came home and fell asleep on the couch. He said Hare came up and began yelling at him. He moved to a bedroom and locked the door, but Hare began beating on the door, demanding he open it.  When he did not open the door, she began to use the hammer and crow bar to gain access. He opened the door and Hare came after him with the hammer, the arrest report indicated. He pushed her, took the hammer and relocked the door, using the dresser as an additional barricade. He then called 911. He said Hare had been drinking heavily prior to the incident.

Hare was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. She was released at 6:46 p.m. Saturday after posting $5,000 bond.
